Book Oregon Sky: The Complete Series Review :

I love this series, and the author takes the reader on a fantastic journey with the words she spins, that you feel as if you are a passenger or voyeur along the trail. The stories have a great cast of characters, mystery, suspense, secrets, and more. This is a continuing saga and journey.Phoebe's Promise (Oregon Sky Series Book 1) by Kay DawsonA JOURNEY ACROSS THE OREGON TRAIL TO NEW BEGINNINGSI found this a delightful story and an adventure that takes the reader along the Oregon Trail from Missouri to Oregon and shares some of the landmarks, hardships, trials, daily encounters, and friendships during this arduous journey. As in reality, not everyone who starts on this journey will survive it, death is a part of life, and sadly, lives will be lost to illnesses like cholera and accidents. An older brother, Luke Hamilton, sending his two younger sisters on ahead to be part of the wagon trail while he tries to learn more about the death of their father, leaving 18-year-old Phoebe and 12-year-old Grace entrusted in the care of his friend and trail master, Colton Wallace. Grace has the sweetness and innocents of a child. Phoebe has watched her brother leave home; her mother dies, and then her father dies in a fire. Left with a lecherous uncle, she knows she must protect Grace, and if that means joining a wagon train to Oregon, then that is what she will do to keep her promise of protection. The plot kept me captivated and the pages turning as the adventure unfolds. The dialog is entertaining, with Phoebe and Colton having a battle of wills and words. Two people each holding on to promises made or dealing with past issues. The camaraderie of many of the travelers is heartwarming. Still, there is always a troublemaker or two, and they don't take long to prove they are never one to offer any suggestions, only complaints.Audrey's Awakening (Oregon Sky Book 2)IF THERE WERE EVER TWO HEARTS AND SOULS WHO NEEDED ONE ANOTHER, IT WAS THEIRSI found book two in the Oregon Sky Series delightful, and it will read well as a standalone. It does have many of the people that are introduced in book one, Phoebe's Promise. Audrey Thomsen lost her childhood sweetheart and husband, Pete, during the wagon train trek to Oregon to Cholera but continued on the journey, selling her wagon and staying with Phoebe and Grace. She left Kentucky because her father tried to force a marriage to a man he made a contract with, Frank Hillman.Widower Reid Wallace cannot get past his wife's death during childbirth, even though he has a precious daughter, Sophia, and he needs a wife to help him mother her and take care of the home. For Audrey to stay in Oregon, a mutual agreement is made with Reid that they will marry in name only, and it will be a marriage of convenience. Audrey's father is furious and determined that he will take her back to Kentucky, and she will be forced to honor his contract with Frank. She is no more than a pawn for him to gain status, and her feelings do not matter. The story's plot is full of memories, angst, emotions, and harrowing life and death adventures. To what lengths will a person go to have their way? The dialog and thoughts of both Reid and Audrey are emotional as they try to deal with their situation and question their betrayal to their respected late spouses. This is a clean romance with lots of emotional baggage, memories, and new beginnings. Two people must say goodbye to their former lives and mates and open their hearts to the future and happiness. "I was meant to find you, so you could save me." The story does not end on a cliffhanger, but one can see several promising future stories in this series.Ella's Embrace (Oregon Sky Series Book 3)HOLDING OUT FOR A DREAMI enjoyed this third book in the Oregon Sky Series, where we have come to know the Wallace family and their friends. Titus Cain had come to help his Uncle Walter Jenkins out on his ranch after the death of his brother, Martin. Now someone has killed Martin, but Walter has been murdered, and Titus could not stop it or see who it was. Too many mysterious incidences, stolen horses, and not only these deaths have Titus concerned. The reading of the will comes as a shock, with the ranch being shared by Titus and Ella Wallace, who has worked with Walter training horses. The plot is full of mystery, suspense, secrets, devious characters, nefarious acts, and then throw in a determined woman who won't let anyone stop her from her dream and work. Ella will defy convention, move to the shack and live on the ranch as an unmarried lady. Titus will move to the barn, and they will try and get along. Evil is lurking and has a sinister plan, wanting the land owned by Walter, but how far will they go to obtain the property? One man has been trying to buy the land for years; is he behind all the trouble. There is an excellent cast of characters with plenty of angst and entertainment. This is a clean story and will read well as a standalone but more enjoyable as the order is written.Ella, like any woman, has dreams; she wants a man to love that will love her unconditionally, allow her to be his partner and work together, and hopefully have children as part of that love. But no man has come along that makes her feel loved. Titus Cain is living with demons of his past, a cruel, abusive father who told Titus he was just like him. He refuses to be that man or put any woman in danger, so he vows not to marry. Titus and Ella have a love-hate working relationship. They both notice the other, but both have decided not to marry for various reasons. Living on a ranch together leads tongues to wagging, but one unfortunate event will alter their life, even if it was innocent. The guilt of entrapment, an unwanted marriage of convenience, but what about love and desire? Was Walter's plan of joint ownership a form of matchmaking from the grave?Hope's Honor (Oregon Sky Book 4)I DON'T KNOW HOW I CAN EVER REPAY YOUEach story in the Oregon Sky saga will read as a standalone, but even better if read in the written order. The stories cover many families, especially the Wallace family. When Logan Wallace, along with Mr. James O'Hara and several others, go to Sacramental, California, to bring back cattle and dry goods, they will find themselves coming home with more than they intended. The story is about good versus evil and how sometimes people find themselves in unusual circumstances that can change many lives.Hope and her brother Max have been left in the care of their stepmother, a woman who does not care about them and has evil intentions for their future. Planning to sell Hope at auction weeks before turning eighteen in a seedy part of town leaves deaf Max at a disadvantage. Sadie tells Hope that she will send him off to an orphanage where she will never be able to find him. Trying to escape, will have Hope captured, but Max getting away.Logan is ready to leave Sacramental until a young boy knocks into him and grabs his wallet. Chasing him through town will take him to the seedier part of town, but he still follows him into a dark building. Seeing them bring a young woman on stage, he will catch up with Max and his money, but shocked to hear that this young woman is being auctioned off to the highest bidder. The money is to purchase a mare for Ella, but now he finds himself buying Hope's freedom instead. The plot will bring Logan rescuing Hope and Max and learning about their stepmother; he knows he must get them safely out of town. He will pay Ella back and knows she would agree with what he has done. Where he can get Hope and Max to and leave them is the question. Hope is determined she must pay off her debt. He doesn't want her to feel like she is indebted to him."You’re free to go, you know. Once I get you far enough away from your stepmother, you and your brother can leave. I don’t want you thinking just because I paid for you that I honestly believe you belong to more or anything.”“I know you didn’t ask to be stuck with two extra people, especially not a woman and a boy who likely won’t be able to offer you much help. But there’s nothing for us here. I won’t ask for anything from you other than a chance to do what I can to repay you for the kindness you’ve shown me today.”The trail from California to Oregon includes many dangers, especially when you have a deaf child who cannot hear when warnings are called out. Knowing that Sadie’s men are looking for Max to take him away keeps them on guard. Keeping Hope and Max safe from Sadie is the number one goal; figuring out what to do with them later will just have to come later. Logan jokes that women make men soft, and he has no intentions of settling down anytime soon. There is just something special about Hope, she never complains, goes out of her way to assist and be kind, and he cares about her and Max. When trouble follows them to Bethany, what will he do to protect her?The story has danger, suspense, secrets, deceit, mystery, and the beginnings of a sweet love story. This is a clean historical with a great cast of characters that keep the pages turning. We learn more about another character that has a story in books to come later on.Sylvia's Spirit (Oregon Sky Series Book 5)FROM BRIDE TO WIDOW ON THE SAME DAYEach story in the Oregon Sky series will read as a standalone, but each will have people from previous books. Luke Hamilton and his father had had a falling out, and he left Missouri and went out on his own, but then both parents died, and Luke stepped out to care for his two sisters, Phoebe and Grace., sending them from Missouri to Oregon on a wagon train. Now Luke is the Sheriff of Bethany.Sylvia left Missouri and traveled to Oregon to become the mail-order bride of Duncan Coulter. She knew that she needed to leave her mother before she ruined her, and she wanted to have a marriage and family. They married as soon as she got off the stagecoach at the church and then went to his home. She will wake up from resting from her prolonged travels and go outside to find Duncan on the ground in a pool of blood, and that is where Randolph and Minnie will see her, holding a bloody rock. The plot will have Randolph dragging Sylvia into Bethany and demand she be locked up and charged with the murder of Duncan. She is still in her wedding clothes and cut up and bruised from the mishandling by Randolph. Scared and in a strange town, she is shown compassion by Luke and his sister Grace.Luke must do his duty as sheriff and place her in a cell. With Randolph screaming for justice, he won’t even hear her side of what happened. All he has is two different accounts and a bloody rock. Why won’t Randolph allow him on the property to investigate the murder? The more Luke talks to Sylvia, the more he believes she is innocent, but how can he get the evidence without getting on the property. Now the traveling judge is coming, and the threat of taking her away puts her life in jeopardy. How far will a man go to protect the innocent and still uphold his oath of office as a sheriff? Was it a crime of passion? One of greed? So who killed Duncan Coulter? Is the fire to the church another clue in this mystery? Will Luke be able to prove Sylvia innocent and discover who killed Duncan and why?“I’ve never had anyone in my life who cared about me the way you have. You didn’t even know me, but you believed in me. You took care of me when no one else would have.” –Sylvia“I told you, I always have a plan. All I need is for you to trust me.”“It would appear you’re my prisoner once again.”The story is a clean historical western that has mystery and suspense, along with murder. There is an excellent cast of characters with plenty of angst, anger, bitterness, hatred, and a lack of respect for life. It also brings out the attitude of how a woman would be treated. It was also fun to see characters from previous stories. I love the determination of Grace and her loyalty to Sylvia.
This was such a heartwarming series! The Wallace family is such a kind and loving family, always looking out for others. I highly recommend to anyone who is looking for a happy reading experience.
